GE has 13 years of experience providing infrastructure technology at the Games, but the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 is something special, because it is the first time GE’s digital industrial technology will be debuting at the Olympic Games.
The world’s first “smart energy” Olympic Games
In the 122-year history of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 will be recorded as the world’s first smart energy Olympic Games, with GE’s Energy Monitoring System.
Electric power plays a key role in the operation of the Games. Without stable power supply, it will be impossible to continue with the Games. There will be problems with time keeping equipment, with medical facilities, operational facilities, accommodation, and the list goes on. This is why GE is installing an Energy Monitoring System (EMS) that will give the organizing committee a real-time visibility of energy consumption at 16 major Olympic venues. EMS will be the first GE digital industrial technology to be used at the Games.
The venues that EMS will monitor include the Olympic stadiums, athlete’s village, the Olympic Park in Gangneung, and the energy distribution and consumption data from all the venues will be integrated into an integrated dashboard real-time. Power is used in a wider variety of ways than we expect. Each ski lift on a ski course, for example, needs electricity to function. The lights at the sporting venue, as well as lights that line the ski slopes, require stable energy to stay lit. Reliable energy is also crucial for the IBC (International Broadcast Centre) and the Olympic Polyclinic where 24-hour operation is a must.
EMS offers real-time energy management and enables prompt diagnosis for quick problem solving in the case of power failures that may occur. GE’s EMS, which will be installed at the Main Operations Center of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, will fully support the management and operation at the Games.
EMS will be debuting at this year’s Olympic Games, but it can be used in future Olympic Games and other major sporting events at a greater capacity. The current solution supports energy monitoring of the venues, but it has the potential to provide powerful analytics when merged with other digital industrial solutions.
